ABOUT ME



Dr. Mark McDonnell specializes in treating a wide array of foot and ankle conditions, including foot deformities, congenital conditions, dermatologic procedures, sports injuries and fracture care. He provides patient specific care that allows the patient to return to their desired activity level.

In 1991, Dr. McDonnell graduated from the University of Notre Dame with a B.S. in Biology, and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the United States Army. Upon completion of his undergraduate studies, he attended the California College of Podiatric Medicine and graduated in 1995. As a Captain in the U.S. Army, he was stationed at Ft. Lewis Madigan Army Medical Center in Tacoma, Washington for his surgical residency. He then served on Active Duty at Ft. Hood in Killeen as Chief of Podiatry. While at Ft. Hood, he evaluated and treated various foot and ankle pathologies on both Active Duty soldiers and retirees. In 2001, Dr. McDonnell left Active Duty and entered private practice in San Marcos and Southwest Austin.

Dr. McDonnell has hospital privileges at Seton Hays and Seton Southwest Hospitals as well as Surgicare of South Austin and San Marcos Surgery Center. He is Board Certified by the American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgeons for over 20 years and is a Fellow of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons. He is a team doctor for Texas State University. Dr. McDonnell has also been on medical missions to Nicaragua and Guatemala to treat underprivileged pediatric patients. He currently is President of “Pies al Futuro”, a charity that raises donations for these medical missions.

Dr. McDonnell believes in treating patients as individuals and tailoring their treatment to their specific needs and activity level. In cases where surgery is necessary, he will thoroughly explain the procedure and the anticipated result. With 12 years of participation in postoperative pain research, as both an Investigator and Sub Investigator, he utilizes research based postoperative pain control.

In his free time, Dr. McDonnell enjoys his two children as they grow up. He also enjoys playing soccer, watching athletic events and traveling. He is an avid supporter of Austin FC and attends most of the home matches.
